Elephant
I am an elephant.
I live in a herd like the ones you call a family. Ones you protect with your life. You learn from them and with them. You love them and hate them. Yet, you still live with them.
I am of value like my ivory tusk. I am so valued, no price is allowed to be on it. I am butchered in order to own, to be crafted into something that is no longer me. But I own myself and I will persevere.
I remember things like my ancestors before me. Full of ancient old wisdom and knowledge about life. Yet constantly learning and coping with the changes that surround me.
I find life a long journey like my migration across Africa. Traveling along a road known only to me. There are twists and there are turns along the way. With my inward compass never faltering to tell me where to go.
I am observed by many like a caged animal in a zoo. Prodded by those who have studied me, yet don’t know me for ME. Judged by so called ‘scientists’ about my life and imperfections. Never getting to know me, but keeping me just out of reach.
I am sturdy like my build. I will not falter from the path I choose. I understand it has its highs and lows, but I will always be dependable wherever I go.
I am strong like the might of my herd. Alone, I seem vulnerable. Unable to take care of myself. But life gave me the work out of a lifetime. I will hurtle any and all obstacles in my way. I enjoy a challenge and take it as an opportunity to grow stronger.
I am grey like the rest of my species. I am neither of the opinion of white or black, but a mixture of both. Independent, yet with many values. My mind works in all directions, working out what I believe to be right and true.
I make an impression like my feet in the African sand. I am loud, crazy, and intense. If I have a mission I won’t stop until I accomplish it. I want to make my print in the world and will work on it till I no longer can.
I am the caboose like the last elephant in line. I am conscientious of my surroundings and wanting to keep people safe and together. I work to try and make sure that no one is left behind and forgotten. Being left means being alone, terrified, and having to fend for yourself.
I am an elephant.
