“Dreams” by Langston Hughes (1994)
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
My Interpretation
It takes something more
Than just a conversation to bring a dream to life.
If forces truth to be told
And true inner seeking.
It forces the mind to branch out
And allows play to enter life.
It pushes us towards something
Greater than what we thought.
It pushes us to reach deep down and
Look at infinite possibilities.
It speaks the subconscious’
Inner desires and aspirations.
It speaks meaning to what
Words cannot.
It connects us to others
And new possibilities.
It connects us to our inner selves
Which, in turn, pushes us forward.
It allows us to breath deeper
And see farther.
It allows a greater purpose
To flourish instead of frivolous nothings.
It whispers sweet-nothings that
Soothes our soul in this chaotic world.
It whispers our greatest abilities into action
Changing the world and people around us.
It breeds hope for something greater
And almost impossible to occur.
It breeds joy and fulfilment
In the possibilities around us.
It is a spark of a thought that leaps
Into words.
It is a word in action that feeds
Into an inner furnace ready to be switched on.
It feels like hope on a cloudy-
Day when the world seems hopeless.
It feels like pure sunshine squished
Into a juicy fruit.
It fills my soul with this inexplicable
Feeling of being on top of the world.
It fills a deeper meaning for my life
And gives purpose in this chaos I live in.
Dreams bring forth an inner courage,
A feeling you didn’t think possible.
Dreams bring forth an inner desire
To do something greater, something better.
Dreams ebb-and-flow,
They grow and shrink.
Dreams change with the tide,
But never let them go.
For if you do,
They will simmer out and perish
From the sudden halt of life.
